NHM "Ormoceras" locality (Ordovician of Saudi Arabia)

Also known as Tabuk Fm., Hanadir Mbr.

Where: Tabuk, Saudi Arabia (28.5° N, 36.0° E: paleocoordinates 48.0° S, 133.6° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Hanadir Member (Tabuk Formation), Late/Upper Llanvirn (463.5 - 460.9 Ma)

• see discussion in the primary reference

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shoreface; micaceous, pebbly, shelly/skeletal, argillaceous, silty sandstone

• "The cephalopods are preserved in a poorly sorted, silty sandstone in which a small proportion of larger grains up to 0.5mm in diameter is present. The large grains are composed of individual feldspars, pyroxenes and/or amphiboles, iron oxides and muscovite. Small angular clasts of shale (2-5mm across) are also present. Apart from fragments of cephalopod shell, the component shelly material includes trilobite exuviae. All the shell fragments rest in positions parallel to the bedding and show some evidence of imbrication; in general, they rest facing concave down. Layering suggestive of cross-ripple lamination is also present."

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: recrystallized, replaced with dolomite, replaced with siderite, replaced with limonite
